Raku

I Raku fire specific pieces of my work using Spectrum Raku glazes, (bought from Bath Potters), as they give such beautiful results.

Modern Raku is based on an ancient Japanese firing technique, which involves removing the work from the kiln at 1000c, then burying it in a bed of sawdust until it has cooled to a reasonable temperature, and finally quenching it in water. This method produces intensely coloured, lustrous, crackle glazes, combined with a dark smoked body. It is difficult to precisely predict the outcome of these firings so some wonderful, unexpected results are often obtained.
